History of the Picts Tribe of Scotland

The Picts were an amalgam of tribes who lived in the eastern and northeastern regions of  Scotland during the ancient and early medieval period, merging into other peoples around the tenth century. Origins The origins of the Picts are hotly are disputed: one theory claims they were formed of tribes who predated the arrival of the Celts in  Britain, but other analysts suggest that they may have been a branch of the Celts. The coalescence of the tribes into the Picts may well have been a reaction to the Roman occupation of Britain. Language is equally controversial, as there’s no agreement on whether they spoke a variant of Celtic or something older. Their first written mention was by the Roman orator Eumenius in 297 CE, who mentioned them attacking Hadrian’s Wall. The differences between Picts and Britons are also disputed, with some works highlighting their similarities, others their differences; however, by the eighth century, the two were thought to be different from their neighbors. Pictland and Scotland The Picts and  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹Romans had a relationship of frequent warfare, and this didn’t change much with their neighbors after the Romans withdrew from Britain. By the seventh century, the Pictish tribes had merged together into a region named, by others, as ‘Pictland’, albeit with a varying number of sub-kingdoms. They sometimes conquered and ruled neighboring kingdoms, such as Dà ¡l Riada. During this period a sense of ‘Pictishness’ may have emerged among the people, a sense that they were different from their older neighbors that werent there before. By this stage Christianity had reached the Picts and conversions had occurred; there was a monastery at Portmahomack in Tarbat during the seventh to early ninth centuries. In 843 the King of the Scots, Cà ­naed mac Ailpà ­n (Kenneth I MacAlpin), also became King of the Picts, and shortly after the two regions together into one kingdom called Alba, from which Scotland developed. The peoples of these lands merged together to become Scots. Painted People and Art It is not known what the Picts called themselves. Instead, there is a name which may be derived from the Latin picti, which means ‘painted’. Other pieces of evidence, like the Irish name for the Picts, ‘Cruithne’, which also means ‘painted’ leads us to believe that the Picts practiced body painting, if not actual tattooing. The Picts had a distinct artistic style that remains in carvings and metalwork. Professor Martin Carver has been quoted in The Independent as saying: â€Å"They were the most extraordinary artists. They could draw a wolf, a salmon, an eagle on a piece of stone with a single line and produce a beautiful naturalistic drawing. Nothing as good as this is found between Portmahomack and Rome. Even the Anglo-Saxons didnt do stone-carving, as well as the Picts, did. Not until the post-Renaissance were people able to get across the character of animals just like that.†

A History of the Horn, Better Known as the French Horn

Throughout the last six centuries, the evolution of horns has gone from the most basic of instruments used for hunting and announcements to more sophisticated musical versions designed to elicit the most melodious sounds. The First Horns The history of horns starts with the use of actual animal horns, hollowed out of the marrow, and blown into to create loud sounds announcing celebrations and the start of feasts, as well as for sharing warnings, such as the approach of enemies and threats. The Hebrew shofar is a classic example of an animal horn that was, and still is, widely used in celebrations. These culturally significant rams horns are used to announce major holidays and celebrations, such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. However, the basic animal horn does not allow for much manipulation of sound other than what the user can do with his mouth. Rafael Ben-Ari/Getty Images Transitioning From Communication Tool to Musical Instrument Making the transition from a method of communication to a way to create music, horns were first formally seen being used as musical instruments during 16th-century operas. They were made from brass and mimicked the structure of the animal horn. Unfortunately, they provided a challenge for adjusting notes and tones. As such, horns of different lengths were introduced, and players had to switch between them throughout a performance. While this did provide some added flexibility, it wasnt an ideal solution, and horns werent widely used. During the 17th century, additional modifications to the horn were seen, including the enhancement of the bell end (larger and flared bells) of the horn. After this alteration was made, the cor de chasse, or French horn as the English called it, was born. The first horns were monotone instruments. But in 1753, a German musician called Hampel invented the means of applying movable slides (crooks) of various length that changed the key of the horn. In 1760, it was discovered rather than invented that placing a hand over the bell of the French horn lowered the tone, called stopping. Devices for stopping were later invented, which further enhanced the sound that performers could create. In the early 19th century, pistons and valves, instead of crooks, were used, giving birth to the modern French horn and eventually the double French horn. This new design allowed for an easier transition from note to note, without having to switch instruments, which meant performers could keep a smooth and uninterrupted sound. It also allowed for players to have a wider range of tones, which created more complex and harmonic sound. Despite the fact that the term French horn has been widely accepted as the proper name of this instrument, its modern design was actually developed by German builders and is most frequently manufactured in Germany. As such, many experts assert that the proper name for this instrument should simply be a horn. Who Invented the French Horn? Tracing the invention of the French horn to one person is tricky. However, two inventors are named as the first to invent a valve for the horn. According to the Brass Society, Heinrich Stoelzel (1777–1844), a member of the band of the Prince of Pless, invented a valve that he applied to the horn by July 1814 (considered the first French horn) and Friedrich Blà ¼hmel (fl. 1808–before 1845), a miner who played trumpet and horn in a band in Waldenburg, is also associated with the invention of the valve. Edmund Gumpert and Fritz Kruspe are both credited with inventing double French horns in the late 1800s. German Fritz Kruspe, who has been noted most often as the inventor of the modern double French horn, combined the pitches of the horn in F with the horn in B-flat in 1900.

My Parent s First Male Child - 1303 Words

I am my parent’s first male child but I do have two older sisters this makes me the third and the first male child. I was born in a small village on the coast of The Republic of the Gambia called â€Å"Gunjur Village† on the Atlantic Ocean. A house less than a mile from the Beach. Growing up in a small village where everyone knows each other, life was easier unlike urban life, people live like family, your neighbors are involved and supportive to each other and a great emphasis was attached to children’s respecting those that are older than them and those of their parents counterparts or age mates are treated with utmost respect as you will your parents. Every child will have to go greet the male head of every family clan in the morning for prayers. This male head of the family can be your uncle, grandfather or whomever is considered the head of the family clan all this to show respect and recognition that they are alive and they matter and their prayers help the y will pray for you by rubbing their hand on top of your head asking God to continue to bless you your entire life. I am so happy that my parents are remarried. There is no better life than to see your parents working out things that has always been affecting their lives in regards to differences in many aspects of their lives. It is clear in our society that violent crimes, such as murder, should carry some sort of stiffer punishment than that of other, lesser crimes. What is not clear is what that punishment should be. One punishment that is a constant source of debate is the death penalty. In this paper, I will examine whether the death penalty is or is not ethical. Both sides of the issue will be explained, through examination of various aspects of it, which include religious and financial considerations, whether the death penalty is a deterrent or not, and whether or not it can be regarded as justice. I submit that the death penalty is an ethical and equitable punishment for murderers, and should be used throughout our country. The seemingly greatest amount of debate comes from a religious standpoint. Depending on whose interpretation one hears, the Bible is for or against capital punishment. Verses from The Bible are used by both sides of the argument to support their own beliefs. The United S tates is made up of numerous different religious cultures. Question: How should business, labour, and the government deal with plant closings and layoff of employees? Should government be involved at all? Support your argument with examples where possible. Answer: Introduction Globalization has led to easy access to human and other resources across borders; it has given rise to outsourcing which has increased competition worldwide(Faiola, 2009). Slowing economy in Asian markets has dampened the extent to which workforce used to be earlier demanded. Due to rapid rise in globalization, political pressures and slowing of economies some prominent manufacturing units and plants have closed down, cutting a large number of jobs. Closing down of plants or impermanent shutdown of solitary vocational site along with office space hampers a large number of workers. The problem of plant shut down and layoff is acute in Singapore, where individuals have often resorted to suicide due to its adverse effects. An average of 50 workers are impacted who are engaged for 20 hours per week in a month, 500 odd workers who work for 20 hours per week along with 50 to 499 additional employees(Yellen, 2008). These employees constitute of one third workforce and hence will have an imp act on other factors. The essay is an analysis of layoff and plant closing challenges in Singapore, and the ways business, laborers, government and society is handling them. Motorola also shut their cell-phone manufacturing unit removing 700 individuals from employment. Thus, many corporates and organizations are responsible for such layoffs and closing down of plants(Milanez, 2013). Management of organization needs to have strategic plans and processes in order to deal with remuneration, closing down of plant expenses and in layoffs. Organizations needs to include job counseling, placement assistance, review potential working environment, administrative contacts and managing litigations in plant conditions and so on. Proper strategies within organization can help significantly overcome stresses during layoffs and plant close-down. Laborers are the primary victims of layoffs and hence suffer from mental illness and absence of motivation(Ng, 2013). Providing therapists for reframing techniques and overcoming negative situation helps laborers cope with the condition and opt for further opportunities. It is extremely important to understand and help laid-off employees overcome emotional and mental conditions; hence managers along with other employees should help them. An effective communication strategy helps individuals to cope up with the condition in a better way. When managers or administrators communicate with individuals it has a better effect compared to when it has been communicated by HR managers or administrators(Atanassov, 2009). Government has an integral role to play in cases of plat shut down and laborers layoffs as most of the plants are run by private investments from Asian countries. Governments from Asian countries allow investments following pressure from influential countries which often divert their funds to more profitable and lucrative shores. Due to Asian market dominance in the world currently especially of Indian and Chinese markets FMCG; automobile and multi-brand retailing has grown at a more rapid pace compared to the rest of the world. Current recession in business scenarios and dominance of Asian markets has further put pressure on neighboring countries in regards to investment(Guzmn, 2014). The government has primary role in maintaining equilibrium in the national as well as international market prior to their breakdown. Primarily the company had refused for additional compensation to the employees and also refused to transfer workforce to Chinese plants. In its liquidation processes, the government intervened as the companys stock price had been deeply affected, majority of the workers were shifted to Chinese plant nearby. Around 450 workers had been shifted till the end of 2010(Beardwell, 2007). In case of plant shut down and layoffs mental health of workers in the young and middle aged categories are affected. The government of Singapore following such incidents developed a community service aimed at helping the workers that time, through community help services and programs. The programs and services helped in a great way these individuals cope with their current situations and overcome stress(Elliott, 2012). Layoffs and plat shut down has been identified to be associated with work distress and leads to unavoidable business costs, according to certain financial specialists. In Singapore this issues has gained immensely prominent as being creating mechanical relations for opportunity seeking fascinated investors.
